On August 30 1978, the body of Kenya’s founding father, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, was taken from Nairobi to his rural home in Gatundu for a final overnight vigil. It was a deeply symbolic gesture, a return to the soil that raised him, the land from which his long journey to national leadership had begun. Escorted by military guards and watched by mourning citizens along the roadside, the procession moved slowly through the waiting crowds. Kenyatta spent his final night under the stars of his homeland
