Hattie McDaniel, the youngest of 13 children, was born in 1893 to formerly enslaved parents. She was a songwriter & performer. She honed her songwriting skills while working with her brother Otis at his carnival company. She & her sister Etta Goff launched the McDaniel Sisters Company, an all-female minstrel show in 1914.
