When an aircraft prepares to launch off an aircraft carrier, a JBD, or Jet Blast Deflect raises behind the departing aircraft to protect the flight deck from its blast. Due to the heat produced by after burning engines like the Tomcat, the JBD needed to be equipped with water tubes to cool the surface. One unfortunate fact is, Cat 4 on Forrestal Class Carriers were not equipped with water tubes, and were only used for launching aircraft such as the A-6, or A-7s..
