Pliny the Elder, author of Natural History and a Roman admiral, did not retreat. Stationed across the bay in Misenum, he ordered ships to rescue those trapped by the disaster. Overcome by ash and toxic gases, he collapsed and died on the shore. His nephew, Pliny the Younger, stayed behind and later described the eruption in two letters to the historian Tacitus.
