In Rob Dowling's 31 seasons as the head coach at Avon Old Farms, New Britain's George Springer is his first major league player.

Springer has endured a string of jeers, taunts and boos since the scandal’s revelation prior to the 2020 season. The headache extended to World Series Media Day in Toronto, where Springer looked to move on from the scandal as quickly as possible, despite multiple questions on the topic this week.

Springer’s father slammed Mariners fans, saying they had “the most despicable behavior.” While some fans agreed with his father, many reminded him about his son’s involvement in the 2017 sign-stealing scandal with the Houston Astros.

Springer initially tried to stay in the game, but after heading to first base he retreated to the dugout, all the while visibly limping. Springer was replaced by fellow outfielder Joey Loperfido, who was only added to the roster on Thursday, replacing injured outfielder Anthony Santander.
