The Earthquakes have hired the New York-based investment firm Moelis & Co. to lead the sale. The Earthquakes, then known as the San Jose Clash, were a founding member of MLS in 1996.
San Jose Earthquakes owner John Fisher confirmed on Wednesday that he is putting the MLS club on the market, and has hired investment bank Moelis & Co. to help facilitate the sale.
Moelis, San Jose and MLS declined to comment. In January, the Earthquakes ranked 20th in Sportico’s MLS team valuations at $600 million. Fisher paid a $20 million expansion fee for the team in 2007.
The U.S. Open Cup — which continues play Tuesday, July 8 — is down to its elite eight, with each remaining club representing MLS.
