PAGOSA SPRINGS, Colo. — Mandatory evacuation orders prompted by flooding in Pagosa Springs and Archuleta County were lifted Tuesday, while some evacuations in neighboring La Plata County, where dozens of homes have been damaged, were lifted Thursday.

Only about one-fifth of applicants for federal disaster assistance from Kerr County, Texas, have been deemed eligible to get financial help so far, leaving hundreds without governmental aid more than three months after deadly floods ravaged the county on July 4.

For almost two decades, the Flathead County Detention Center has dealt with overcrowding, unsafe working conditions and limited space for inmates with mental health needs.

Multiple chapters on the Navajo Nation were impacted by recent flooding from a tropical storm that caused dams to fail and cut off access to homes and farmlands for residents.

Lawmakers say the committee will examine the state's preparation and response, along with the circumstances surrounding the disaster. The historic flooding led to more than 130 deaths.

A man accused of causing $300,000 in damage to the sprinkler system at the Kern County Superior Court building is set to appear in court at the end of October.
