Activist David Hogg is exiting his role as Democratic National Committee vice chair, he said Wednesday, after months of controversy sparked by his plan to back primary challenges against Democrats he claims are "asleep at the wheel.

Hogg announced his retreat hours after the DNC removed him and another officer, Pennsylvania state lawmaker Malcolm Kenyatta, from their vice chair roles, saying the February elections they won did not follow the party’s rules. Hogg said he will not run in the redo elections to be held over the weekend.

Hogg's efforts to primary Democrats with younger candidates angered members of the party who disagreed with DNC leadership meddling in primaries.
