Tow truck drivers in California set a new low bar of despicable behavior after towing cars out of the Eaton Fire and demanding ransoms for their safe return.

According to Barger's office, the tow companies allegedly targeted the areas surrounding the Eaton Fire beginning on Jan. 7, the day the fire started. Bargers' constituents said the operators falsely claimed to be contracted by Altadena officials and then proceeded to tow vehicles without telling owners where they were being taken.

L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger is now urging Eaton Fire survivors to come forward if they were targeted by fraudulent tow companies. The California Department of Insurance has also set up a task force investigating the scam that stretches from the Inland Empire to Altadena.
