Dawn Staley has built a college basketball powerhouse with the South Carolina Gamecocks. Staley recently led South Carolina to the national title game. The Gamecocks defeated Tennessee Tech, Indiana, Maryland, Duke and Texas en route to a championship matchup against the UConn Huskies.

The long-awaited statue of South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley was unveiled Wednesday afternoon near downtown Columbia. The statue, which is 14 feet tall, made of bronze and weighs nearly 2,000 pounds, depicts a smiling Staley on a ladder holding a basketball net, as if she’d just cut it down after winning a national championship.

The newly unveiled statue in Columbia, South Carolina, honoring decorated athlete and coach Dawn Staley represents her basketball legacy, as well as her ongoing fight for equality.
