A police officer killed by an active shooter in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday spent part of his childhood in Massachusetts, the New York Times reported.

Police in Atlanta say the suspect is dead after a shooting near Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention headquarters.

Emory University said it had an active shooter on its Atlanta campus. The school advised people to avoid the area and shelter in place in a post on its website Friday night. It lifted the shelter in place order roughly an hour later but said a police emergency was ongoing.
