Dangerous heat and humidity are bearing down on the Northeast on Thursday, following a surge of more than 350 storms on Wednesday — one of the stormiest days of 2026 so far.

Damaging storms are sweeping through the Midwest, disrupting flights at Chicago airports and knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of customers.

In Des Moines, Iowa, a 54-year-old man died at a homeless encampment in a park Wednesday after being hit by a tree that “broke apart and fell during strong storms,” police said in a statement.
