One of the biggest stars in Americana music just released a 10-song tribute to him, "Seth Avett Sings Greg Brown." A Wisconsin publisher is readying a first-ever Greg Brown songbook.

Today, Greg lives in Iowa City with his third wife, fellow folk musician Iris DeMent. He's now in his 60s and is fading out of the music picture, touring a lot less and putting out fewer records.

“When I heard Greg Brown’s music, it opened the door to a world of songwriting inspiration,” says Avett. “Since then, I’ve been connecting to the arc of a man’s life and his story.

Just when you might fear that folk music is dwindling away, Iris DeMent, Greg Brown, Seth Avett, Rhiannon Giddens and Dom Flemons demonstrate how vital it still is.

The 73-year-old spoke to the Press-Citizen on the phone from his home in Iowa City about his devotion to music, one particularly moving performance and retirement. Q&A with Greg Brown ...
