A coalition of mostly Democratic-led states filed a lawsuit on Monday challenging a move by U.S. President Donald Trump's administration to withhold about $6.8 billion in congressionally approved federal funding for K-12 schools.

Providers say after-school programs and other services for the coming school year are threatened without the federal money, which was abruptly withheld.

More than $100 million in education funding was withheld from Massachusetts on July 1, while $29 million was withheld from Rhode Island. More than $50 million was held back from Connecticut, and more than $25 million was withheld each from Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
