TALLAHASSEE — Gov. Ron DeSantis is proposing to eliminate property taxes in Florida — a move that could disproportionately harm public schools and give the state more power over local communities.

At a press conference on Monday, DeSantis reiterated his support for measures to limit or ban the collection of property taxes at the local level in Florida, which bring in more than $40 billion for the state each year.

DeSantis laid out his proposals in a 30-minute State of the State speech to the Legislature on Tuesday, the first day of the 60-day session.

Property taxes are a local issue, not a state one, so an amendment would be required to change the state’s Constitution. But even if lawmakers manage to get such an amendment through, it would still take approval from 60% of Florida voters before amendment could officially pass.
