California Gov. Gavin Newsom says he will deploy the National Guard to support food banks because of expected delays to federal food assistance amid the government shutdown.

The governor unveiled the move today, days after the California Department of Social Services began notifying counties to prepare for the possibility that federally-funded food benefits.

The deployment of California National Guard troops has been extended through February, a detail revealed in an amicus brief filed in the U.S. Supreme Court by California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday.
