Mexican security forces kept up their battle with cartel gunmen following the killing that sparked a surge in violence and put the country on edge. Authorities said more than 70 people died in the attempt to capture Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes and the aftermath.

The Associated Press reports the Mexican army killed cartel leader "El Mencho" on Sunday. Since then, a shelter-in-place order has been issued in Puerto Vallarta and multiple other regions of Mexico.

Violence has broken out in Mexico after the assassination of Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, known as ‘El Mencho’ – a high-profile cartel leader. Head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, known as CJNG, El Mencho oversaw operations of one of the most powerful and fastest growing criminal organisations in Mexico.
