Elon Musk appeared to boast of advance knowledge of a planned arrest related to Social Security fraud, frustrating law enforcement officials, sources tell ABC News.

On March 20, Maryland federal judge Ellen Hollander imposed a temporary restraining order on DOGE to prevent it from obtaining Social Security Administration [SSA] information on millions of Americans. The case was taken by the Alliance for Retired Americans, the American Federation of Teachers and other representative groups.

Social Security cards are not admissible as proof of voter eligibility, but non-citizens are allowed to get one.

The Department of Government Efficiency has shifted its focus to one of the biggest drivers of government spending, social security.

The Social Security Administration is one of multiple government agencies targeted by the Department of Government Efficiency's cost-cutting efforts.

"This is a mind-blowing chart," Musk said at a March 30 campaign event for the Wisconsin Supreme Court election, pointing to data that showed the number of noncitizens who received Social Security numbers from 2021 to 2024. The chart showed a jump from about 270,000 in fiscal year 2021 to more than 2 million in fiscal year 2024.

Republicans are voicing concerns about Musk’s downsizing efforts, which include closing some Social Security offices and curtailing telephone services.
