President Donald Trump announced he will impose an additional 100% tariff on goods from China, on top of the 30% tariffs already in effect, starting November 1 or sooner. The threat is a massive escalation after months of a trade truce between the two nations.

Stocks tied to rare earths jumped after Trump threatened countermeasures against China, noting the country was holding the world "captive" over the metals.

That peace has now broken. On October 9th China laid out a new set of export controls on rare earths, minerals needed to manufacture most electronics of both the consumer and military sort. Mr Trump has now retaliated by announcing an extra 100% tariff on China and export controls on “any and all critical software”.
