The selection process for the competition consists of internal judges who blindly taste the food items. Judges base their scores on three criteria: fairgoer appeal, creativity and taste. New this year is a category for best tasting drink.

Believe it or not, the State Fair of Texas is just over six weeks away. Today, the finalists for this year's Big Tex Choice Awards were announced, including five entries in a new drink category. FOX 4's Peyton May interviewed several of the creators.

Savory, sweet, and drinkable creations are competing once again for the Texas-sized honor of a Big Tex Choice Award at the State Fair of Texas. This year’s finalists have been narrowed down from 30 semi-finalists to feature five savory and five sweet items.
